Play! Design! Share!

Kounkuey Design Initiative(KDI) is a nonprofit urban design and architecture organization that works with local residents in underserved communities to transform unsafe and under-used sites into productive public spaces. Since 2006, KDI has worked with residents in Kibera, Nairobi to build the Kibera Public Space Project(KPSP) network, improving quality of life in the most challenging conditions.

Nexon Foundation and KDI joined forces to bring the power of brick play as a tool for participatory design & community development in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi, with the ultimate goal of transforming unsafe and underutilized community spaces into one that promotes healthy child development and fosters creativity in children.

The partnership involves the development of “Playbases” throughout Kibera. PlayBases will be open for children of all ages and provide a continuum of creative play, learning and development opportunities. KDI will use bricks as engagement and feedback tools in participatory design workshops.
